1. About Evolution Computers

Company profile

Evolution Computers operates in the greater Durban area in South Africa.

Started in the year 2000 we provide high quality computers, networking products, peripherals, and a wide range of IT solutions and services.

Based in Hillcrest, a town just outside of the main city of Durban, we deliver and support most of our products directly at your location.

We service both home and business clients, and pride ourselves on our reputation for service and quality, consistently promoted by existing clients.

We also offer a subcontracting service for companies based in other locations who need a presence in Durban to service their clients on their behalf. We have many successful relationships already established with large Johannesburg and Cape Town based companies. Give us a call if you would like us to support your Durban based branches.

What makes Evolution Computers different from any other computer company out there?

To us, being in business is all about relationships.

We understand that in order to have a successful business relationship with our clients, we must demonstrate our commitment to being a service company that happens to supply IT products, not a supplier of IT products who happens to attempt service. We understand that buying a complicated piece of technology like a modern computer, involves not only the acquisition of the device but also an investment in trust with the supplier of that device.

This is why our motto is Service Driven Technology. We are positioned to supply you with IT products and solutions backed up with a unique service offering. Many other IT companies are too big or do not care to give support after the sale has been effected.

We supply a hardware or software solution and then make our team available to you in the unlikely event of difficulties.

We effect all warranty swap-outs on your behalf, and can liaise with other technology partners that you may have chosen to deliver a product or service for you.

Why our products are different?

Great service is backed by great product.
We are only interested in selling you a product that meets or exceeds our conceptualization of an acceptable computing standard.

We are constantly researching and evaluating our existing product and service offerings to ensure that quality is assured, and constantly on the lookout for the latest high quality product to fit into our established offering.

In short, we sell products and services that will give you the reliability and computing experience you need from today's technology, giving you the highest quality machine at an affordable price.

In terms of our PC product range, our relationship with Intel® Corporation enables us to offer you a three year warranty on the core components of the machine.

Each Intel product goes through extensive testing and quality assurance processes before being sent to market, and is backed by local stores of replacement parts in the unlikely event of a malfunctioning unit.

As Registered Members of Intel's Channel Program, our team receives extensive product  training and demonstrations of coming trends, twice a year so that we can guide you, our valued customer, to the best PC purchase decision possible, and also support the latest technology effectively.

Other PC manufacturers are able to build a licensed version of an Intel® product (often referred to as an "Intel® chipset"), but Intel® is the leader in product design and manufacturing and, because they produce their own silicone substrate (rather than purchasing from the lowest bidder) ensure that the user receives the greatest degree of reliability and the most dependable PC experience possible.

Add to that the extensive testing and quality control throughout the manufacturing process, and the backing of service by Evolution Computers and Intel® remains the choice of people who require the reliability of quality equipment.

Our company ethos

Our company ethos is summed up in our catch phrase: "Service Driven Technology".
We offer high quality, custom built IT products and services to small and medium business, and home users. Products are backed by a service offering based upon an understanding of what people really want from the IT experience. Technology driven by service is the core of our company aesthetic, and is the foundation upon which all products are sold and the guiding principle behind everything we do.

2. Why you should buy from Evolution Computers

There are many reasons why Evolution Computers is your best choice for the purchase of new technology and the services that go with it.

  • We supply complete, custom solutions not just PC's

We believe that there is more to a successful IT experience than just your PC. Your PC should be a good quality buy, at the right price, have bundled services and be tailored to your specific needs. Your PC should be a complete solution for your IT needs - if you wanted to play games, then the PC should have enough power to play games; and if you wanted to run your business from it, it should have Word and Excel on it. You should also be able to get good advice and backup service from a reputable and experienced IT expert to guide you through the tricky, but ultimately very rewarding world of computers. We endeavour to supply just such products and services.

  • We come to your location

Because we offer onsite support services we can sometimes deal with a fault better by being there. Some errors only appear onsite, at your home or business, and are therefore better dealt with onsite. Not only that, but it is much easier for you, the customer, because you do not have to drag all your components to a store, and re-assemble them afterwards.

  • We listen to and understand, your needs

We understand that it is the user, the person at the other end who is just as important as the technology they use every day. Instead of focussing on just your actual PC, we believe it is far more important to talk to you first to find out how the PC fits into the "problem" and how our solution can help fix the problem for you. We do this by listening and understanding your needs, and then advising you accordingly. We also believe very strongly that it is important not to "drop the ball" by keeping you informed about your PC and completing a job until you are satisfied.

  • We have specialised skills and experience

With our training and many years experience in the IT field we have the expertise and experience to solve your IT problem and service your IT need in the best way possible. We design your PC or network and apply that technology to your IT needs. We also have extensive experience configuring and installing a wide range of software and hardware and prevention and removal of virus and Spyware based threats.

  • We are Intel® Channel Partner Registered Members

As recognized Registered Members of the Intel® Channel Program, we receive intensive product training, and have access to confidential product design information to keep our customers ahead of the trend and ensure that you make the best purchasing decision. Intel® is the leading designer and manufacturer of base computer components in the world. Click here to check out their site. Based upon their market leading technology, Evolution Computers can offer you the latest computing technologies, backed by excellent service both from Intel® Corporation and ourselves, to give you and your business the greatest return on investment.

  • We provide the best quality products for your needs

Our Intel based products come with a 3 year warranty and represent the highest quality manufacturing standard in the industry. We also receive priority swap out services from Intel which results in speedy motherboard replacement in the unlikely event of failure. Each Intel board undergoes more than 1 million tests before being sent to market. Because we monitor trends and brands we can help you avoid buying a dodgy brand and we can keep you well informed as to the best technology to buy in light of recent and future trends.

We back all our products with great service

All our products are sold with service backup. What this means is that we are committed to ensuring that you are happy with the product and that your new product is integrated into your existing technologies successfully. When you call us to solve a problem, we make sure to get there as soon as possible, fix the problem completely, and advise you of how to avoid the problem in the future. Check out our Services section in our Company Info page for more info on the wide range of services on offer.

  • We want your future business

We want to develop and maintain a trust based relationship with you and service all your IT needs - from configuration, software installation and sales, PC's, networking and consumables and connectivity solutions. Our commitment to service is what we hope will ensure your future business with Evolution Computers.

3. PC Buyers Guide

Differences in PC's can be divided into price considerations and product considerations:

  1. Price

Quite simply, there are may ways to approach buying a personal computer. Many people use price as the basis for their PC purchase decision. Whilst price is important (no person in their right mind would try to convince you otherwise), price is not made up of only the initial purchase cost of the machine. There are many other components to the 'price' of a machine. When all price components are taken into consideration we say that the "Total Cost of Ownership" has been considered.

TCO - Total Cost of Ownership

The consideration of total cost of ownership involves taking into account the following factors - not only initial purchase price:

Extras not included - some quotes / adverts with a low price are either not complete systems, or have vital parts missing. Monitor and Operating system are sometimes advertised as "optional" even though a PC will not run without them and they can account for up to 40% of the total cost of the machine. Virus protection should come standard on any machine these days, and you should be cautious when it is not included or mentioned. We only supply complete solutions and always offer virus protection when you need it.

Quality of the components - when comparing two products it is important to compare apples with apples. When it comes to PC's this is not so easy because some machines say Intel when they are not, or are copies of Intel designs. If you do not get a genuine Intel motherboard, you will not get the quality and performance of a genuine Intel motherboard. A cheap PC may be produced using cheap components which will impact on system stability and performance. Cheaper designs may be half the price but be very unreliable and only have a limited warranty period (usually 1 year) whereas a Genuine Intel board is very reliable and comes with a full 3 year warranty. This is why we recommend Intel. In terms of price an Intel motherboard will cost between R.100 to R.200 more but we reckon that's not too bad considering all the benefit you get for the extra cost.

Support costs - different machines come with different warranty periods and support options, many of which cost you per hour after the initial sale. We offer 1 months free onsite support (in Durban area) with a new Evolution PC, and free warranty swap out or hardware fault diagnosis for the entire period of your warranty (conditions apply).

Data loss - many companies do not care about your data (which may be the most important part of your machine) and refuse to back it up for you and restore it successfully after work is completed. We back up all your data either free of charge (under certain conditions) or included as standard in our charged services (like an operating system reinstallation - limited to 1 hr) and restore all your data and settings after work is completed on your PC.

Downtime - some mass discounters offer free support with their products but do not tell you that in the event of a problem, the PC has to either be delivered to them, or be removed from your premises for weeks at a time to be sent to a support centre. Downtime costs money, and with an understanding of this, we attempt most repairs onsite, and within as fast a timeframe as possible, thereby minimising downtime. If we do offer a product from a 3rd party vendor (like Acer or Dell) we make sure that they provide you with the best service possible.

Availability of support skills - a good example of this is Linux. Whilst I have a great deal of respect for Linux as an alternative to Windows, it is only recommended for  very advanced users who are prepared to spend time and tinker to get it working, and give it constant attention thereafter to keep it working. Some versions of Linux are FREE (yes FREE) but require vastly more support hours than a comparable Windows product, Support on Windows is more widely available and usually much cheaper than Linux expert support.

Cost of replacement parts - buying a cheap PC from some vendors can cost you greatly in the future. This is primarily because these vendors do not allow you to just put in any replacement part. Usually they require you to purchase their part at a vastly inflated cost. We only build PC's based on industry standards and can supply a wide range of quality replacement parts.

Compatibility - PC's without Microsoft Windows or with other "close" products like Lindows  will not be as compatible to the rest of the world as those with Windows. Some people say this is unfortunate, but the fact remains that the world runs on Windows, especially the world of the user (end customer).

In summary, you can see that using ONLY the initial cost of the PC as your only decision making criteria may put you at a considerable disadvantage. It is important to consider all factors when comparing products, not just initial price. You need to evaluate the quality of the product you are buying and the services or the lack of services bundled with the product. You are much better off paying a bit more for a complete solution that will work when you want it to work, rather than a cheap, incomplete collection of components with no services attached which will not serve your needs.
